Project Description
Green Burn® Cream
Silver Sulfadiazine USP 1% w/w
Description
Silver sulfadiazine has broad antimicrobial activity. It is bactericidal for many Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria as well as being effective against yeast. After application of silver sulfadiazine cream onto the burn wound surface the compound acts a resservoir of silver ions. Silver ion exerts a bactericidal effect on bateria. Silver penetrates into cell of bacteria and binds to DNA, thereby inhibiting replication.
Indication
Prophylaxis and treatment of infection in burn wounds, leg ulcers and pressure sores due to micro-organisms sensitive to this anti-infective
Dosage and administration
Apply a layer approx. 3-5mm thick to the affected area using a sterile glove or spatula. Then cover area with an absorbent gauze dressing and support bandage where necessary. Dressing should be changed and Green Burn cream applied at least every 24 hours in burn treatment or at least three times weekly.
Contraindication
Silver sulfadiazine cream is contraindicated in patients known to be hypersensitivity to silver sulphonamide or to other components of the preparation such as cetyl alcohol or propylene glycol. Because sulphonamide therapy is known to increase the possibility of kernicterus, silver sulphadiazine cream should not be used in pregnant women at term, in premature infants or in infants during the first months of life. It should not be used if hepatic and renal functions become impaired or if the condition of porphyria is suspected.
Side effects
In prolonged treatment of burn wounds involving extensive areas of the body the serum Sulphonamide concentrations may approach the levels equal to those in systemic treatment.
Use in pregnancy and lactation
As Sulphonamide therapy is known to increase the possibility of kernicterus, Silver Sulphadiazine 1% cream should not be used on pregnant women approaching or at term. Green Burn cream is not known whether Green Burn topical passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. You should not breast-feed while using this medicine.
Precaution
Caution is required in the presence of hypersensitivity to Sulphonamides because of possible allergic reactions, in patients with inborn glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, as haemolysis may occur after the application of the cream to the large body surface area; as well as in the presence of hepatic and renal dysfunction. When treatment with Green Burn cream involves prolonged administration or large burn surfaces, the white blood cell count should be monitored, as leukopenia may occur.
Special Warning
Infant: The cream should not be used on premature infants or on newborn infants during the first 2 months of life.
